The Housing & Household Economics program explores the management of household resources and intra-household dynamics from a comparative international perspective, specifically between the Latin American region and the United States.

In this program, students will learn about the basic principles of efficient resource allocation and management, economic decision-making under risk and uncertainty, and the interactions among households with other ecological systems (for example, surrounding neighborhoods, local community, local government, industry, society and its varying cultural beliefs). These topics are studied in the context of family and household, community, and global events within both rural and urban settings.

A highlight of this program is a one-week build project in partnership with Habitat for Humanity's Costa Rica. This experiential learning initiative provides students with the opportunity to study firsthand the housing needs in Costa Rica, and the practical aspects of allocating tangible and intangible resources in vivo. Most importantly, students will simultaneously apply learned theories to problems and enjoy being part of the solution through building a house for a family in need. Other program features are trips to the Pacific Coastal town of Playa Samara, as well as an extended stay in the capital city of San José.
